As a youngster, Pokemon was never something I found intriguing. In fact, my friends could have talked about them all day and it left me with zero interest. Life had other plans though; fast forward to 2013 when the arrival of a beautiful baby boy changed everything for me – he became my prince charming! At only four years old he discovered the wonderful world of Pokemon and his obsession began from that very moment on.
For Halloween 2018, my son was determined to be Ash from the Pokémon franchise. We went into overdrive in our search for a suitable costume and eventually found one–fortunately before that spooky day arrived. To accompany his new outfit, we also purchased “The Deluxe Essential Handbook of Pokemon”. Initially he could not read it himself so asked us to do it daily; however, now with plenty of practice under his belt, he can easily spend hours pouring through its pages reading up on all sorts of Pokémons!
Without a doubt, epic Pokemon battles occur at our home on the regular. To be honest, I have come to enjoy them and am more familiar with their abilities and kinds of attacks. Not only that, but I genuinely relish these “battles”. As someone who has difficulty retaining information due to my bad memory–even after having read the handbook numerous times!–I usually use it so I can follow the battles with him.
When my son enthusiastically requested a Pokemon themed birthday party for his 6th, I wasted no time and created a Pinterest Board to find ideas. Rather than settle with the typical images of Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle – I wanted something fresh. After much searching, I came across outstanding designs depicting only the eyes, nose and mouth of these four characters in soft tones – which entirely won me over!
Today I’m thrilled to show you my creative process behind the decoration of my son’s Pokemon-themed birthday party! To make it easy for all parents to replicate at home, here is what I did: For the background, I printed out 4 characters’ faces. Additionally, with colorful paper triangles crafted by hand – along with circles created using a circle punch tool – plus threading them together through their holes; voila! A beautiful triangle garland piece was made that really pulled the whole decor look together.
To create a visually-pleasing display, I used two colors to decorate each side of the cake. As an added bonus for our guests, we gave out bags filled with snake and ladders board games and delightful treats!
To make their experience extra special, I prepared 12 personalized gift tags for each of my guests. They were able to use the tags on any present they gave or even as a way to personalize school books! My guests absolutely adored them.
Each water bottle was uniquely customized to match the Pokemon birthday party theme.
To bring the Pokemon-themed cake to life, I created adorable little cake toppers and adhered a toothpick on the back of each one. Then I gently placed them atop the perfectly frosted dessert with care.
My son was super happy with his party and it turned to be A Pretty Celebration!
